Kent-Moore J-42168 Shim Selection Kit

For General Motors. 1997-later Corvette. Proper measurement and set-up is crucial for satisfactory operation and long service life of the rear axle. This tool provides the technician with the ability to measure for and select the correct pinion housing and differential-side bearing shims to ensure the axle is set up correctly. Proper set-up of the rear axle with this tool is required to prevent damage to the rear axle. Tool J-42168-1 is placed into the left differential side bearing race bore and held in place by J-42168-9 Tool J-42168-2 and J-42168-11 are inserted into the pinion cartridge, a the gap from J-42168-1 to J-42168-2 is measured and recorded. J-42168-1 is removed, and J-42168-9 is used to determine the depth from J-42168-2 to the bottom of the left differential side bearing race bore. The differential assembly is placed onto J-42168-13, J-42168-7 is inserted into the oil hole of the differential, and the gap between J-42168-7 and J-42168-13 is measured and recorded. Using the equation in the service manual, the shims for the pinion cartridge and left differential side bearing are determined. The shims and left differential side bearing race are installed, and the differential is placed into the housing. The right side bearing race is place onto the right side bearing, J-42168-15 is placed over the bearing race, and the right side cover is installed using J-42168-16 spacers. The gap in J-42168-15 is measured to determine the right side shim. Tool J-42168 includes its own storage case to prevent damage to the precision-ground tools, and an instruction sheet due to its complexity.
