GM-51091 Crank Front Oil Seal Installer is an essential Chevrolet/GMC tool that installs the seal into the correct operating position in the front cover and will also clear the key at the end of the crankshaft.

The front crankshaft seal on Gen V V6/V8 engines is installed in reverse to Gen IV engines and below the surface of the cover.

A common issue is that existing installers, J-41478-A, are incompatible with the new seal, which is fine for the GM-51091.

Using this tool is also relatively straightforward. The seal is placed onto GM-51091 and then piloted into the bore of the front cover. Next, the 16 mm rod and hardware from the former Essential J-41478-A are installed through the GM-51091. They're then threaded into the crankshaft and used against the back of GM-51091 to install the seal. This process helps prevent potential damage to the seal, cover, or crankshaft and correctly positions the seal.
