The rear seal is a press fit to both the engine block and crankshaft. Proper alignment of the inner and outer seal bodies is crucial to prevent leakage. The GM-42849 tool, a two-piece device, mounts onto the crankshaft and applies force to the inner and outer seal bodies. To install the new seal:

  1. Place the new seal onto the inner body of the GM-42849 tool.
  2. Attach the tool to the end of the crankshaft assembly.
  3. Turn the tool's forcing screw to press the seal into the block until it seats fully.
